Helping Children Communicate, Express, Learn, and Grow Through Play

At Hope Kids Special Education School in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Play Therapy uses purposeful and developmentally appropriate play experiences to support children's emotional, social, communication, behavioral, and developmental needs. Our approach recognizes that children have different ways of communicating and learning. Play can provide a comfortable context in which children can explore experiences, practice new skills, express themselves, and build confidence.

What Is Play Therapy?

Play Therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses play as a primary way of communicating and working with children. Children may not always have the vocabulary or developmental ability to explain what they are thinking or feeling. Through play, they can communicate and explore experiences in ways that are more natural to them. A trained professional uses play intentionally and therapeutically, selecting or responding to activities according to the child's developmental level, needs, and therapeutic goals.
Play Therapy Activities
  • Depending on the therapeutic approach and child's goals, play may involve:
  • • Pretend and imaginative play
  • • Dolls, puppets, or figures
  • • Storytelling
  • • Drawing and creative activities
  • • Games
  • • Role-play
  • • Sand or sensory-based activities
  • • Cooperative play
  • • Problem-solving activities

Who Can Benefit From Play Therapy?

Play Therapy may be appropriate for children experiencing a range of emotional, social, developmental, communication, or behavioral difficulties. This may include children with autism, ADHD, developmental delays, communication difficulties, social interaction difficulties, emotional regulation difficulties, behavioral challenges, difficulty with play or peer interaction, or those experiencing significant changes or stressful life experiences. However, Play Therapy is not automatically appropriate for every child with a particular diagnosis.

Why Is Play Important for Children's Development?

Play is not simply entertainment. It provides children with opportunities to practice skills, explore ideas, solve problems, communicate, interact with others, and experience success. Through play, children can develop communication, social skills, emotional development, problem-solving, and executive functioning. The American Academy of Pediatrics describes play as an important context for developing children's cognitive, social-emotional, language, and self-regulation skills.
Communication

Children can practice expressing wants, needs, ideas, feelings, and experiences.

Social Skills
  • Play provides opportunities to practice:

  • • Sharing
  • • Cooperation
  • • Joint attention
  • • Social communication
  • • Negotiation
  • • Playing with others

Play allows children to experiment, make choices, try different solutions, and learn from outcomes.

  • Play can provide opportunities to develop:
  • • Attention
  • • Working memory
  • • Flexible thinking
  • • Planning
  • • Inhibitory control
  • • Self-regulation

What Can Play Therapy Help With?

The goals of Play Therapy are individualized. Depending on the child, therapy may support emotional development, social development, communication, cognitive and learning skills, and confidence and independence.

01

Emotional Development

Children may work on identifying emotions, expressing feelings, understanding emotional experiences, developing coping strategies, managing frustration, coping with changes, and communicating when they need help.

02

Social Development

Play can provide opportunities to practice turn-taking, sharing, cooperation, initiating interaction, responding to others, joint attention, participating in group activities, and developing social communication.

03

Communication

Play can support expressive communication, functional communication, listening and responding, requesting, conversation, non-verbal communication, and social communication. Children who use AAC, pictures, gestures, signs, or other communication methods can also participate in play-based activities using their preferred communication system.

04

Cognitive & Learning Skills

Play can provide opportunities to practice problem-solving, attention, planning, decision-making, flexible thinking, following rules and routines, and learning through exploration.

05

Confidence & Independence

Children can develop confidence by making choices, trying new activities, solving problems, and experiencing success within a supportive environment.

Play Therapy for Children With Autism

Play can provide meaningful opportunities for children with Autism Spectrum Condition to develop communication, social interaction, joint attention, play skills, flexibility, and participation. However, the purpose should not be to make an autistic child's play look “normal” or to eliminate harmless autistic ways of playing. Instead, intervention should focus on meaningful communication, relationships, participation, learning, and the child's individual goals. For example, if a child enjoys lining up objects, a therapist might use that interest to create opportunities for shared attention, requesting, turn-taking, communication, imitation, social interaction, and expanding play.

What Happens During a Play Therapy Session?

There is no single way that a Play Therapy session looks because the approach depends on the child's age, developmental level, needs, and therapeutic goals. A session may include imaginative play, creative activities, games, role-play, cooperative play, and child-led play. The therapist then uses these opportunities intentionally to work toward the child's individual goals.

01

Imaginative Play

Children may use pretend scenarios, dolls, puppets, or figures to explore relationships, emotions, and experiences.

02

Creative Activities

Drawing, art, storytelling, and construction activities can provide opportunities for communication and self-expression.

03

Games

Games can support turn-taking, flexibility, communication, problem-solving, and following rules.

04

Role-Play

Children can practice different social or everyday situations in a safe and supported environment.

05

Cooperative Play

Children can practice interacting with another person, sharing attention, negotiating, and working together.

06

Child-Led Play

Following a child's interests can provide valuable opportunities to understand their communication style, preferences, strengths, and experiences. The therapist then uses these opportunities intentionally to work toward the child's individual goals.
